A team assignment I shared with my colleagues at the Association for Business Communication’s annual conference in Dublin, Ireland last year was recently published in the Business and Professional Communication Quarterly. After a triple-blind peer-review process, the details of the assignment are available in ABC’s refereed journal devoted to the teaching of business communication.
I have used some variation of this assignment at least once a year for the last three years in my Persuasive Business Communication for Hospitality Leaders course. The assignment asks each team to select a city that team members would like to learn more about. Teams of students assume the role of a city’s convention and visitors bureau. Their goal is to persuade a professional association to hold a future conference in their city. Students enjoy the tasks of researching what makes their city special and tailoring their pitch to the a defined audience.
